From Volunteer to Paid Employment

Cameron has been a valued volunteer at our Lighthouse charity shops since 2022. Keen to gain retail experience and grow his confidence, Cameron has flourished—building friendships, learning new skills, and becoming a familiar, friendly face on the till. We’re incredibly proud that his volunteering journey has led to a paid role at B&M.

Why Volunteer With Us?

Volunteering connects you to others:

You will make new friends, it strengthens your ties to the community and broadens your support network, exposing you to people with common interests.

‘I feel 100% part of the Valley CiDS community. I connect with all the staff and our lovely customer.’

Anita – Lighthouse Charity Shop

Volunteering is good for your mind and brings fun and fulfilment:

The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person. You are doing good for others and the community which provides a natural sense of accomplishment.

‘Being part of a very friendly supportive team helps one to feel valued and enriches lives, as well as helping the lives of young people and children. It helps to keep one’s mind young, active and lively.’

Heather – Lighthouse Charity Shop

Volunteering can advance your career:

Through volunteering you can learn and develop important, transferable work skills for example organisation, leadership, teamwork, communication skills, problem solving and task management. You’ll learn to work as a team and with different types of individuals. A CV showing voluntary work looks attractive to future employers.

‘We support each other in achieving new skills and doing things we wouldn’t have thought to do. We all want to do the best for this charity’.

Rob – Volunteer at the Lighthouse Charity Shop

Volunteering increases self-confidence:

While some people are naturally outgoing, others are shy and have a hard time meeting new people. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice and develop your social skills.

‘I love working with others, it has helped with my confidence. The team is friendly and helpful.’

Theresa – Lighthouse Charity Shop

Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy:

Whatever your age or life situation, volunteering can help take your mind off your own worries, keep you mentally stimulated.

‘I really feel part of the Valley CIDS family and it is such a precious feeling! Being at The Saltpot helps mentally, physically – my whole being.’

Catherine – Volunteer at the Saltpot Café
