Whether it's working with children, young people or in one of our many charity shops, there's always plenty of volunteering opportunities with us.

Quest Children's Team

The Valley CIDS Quest team always welcome volunteers to help with our Christian focussed lunch time and afterschool clubs. Help is also welcomed at clubs and groups held in various local schools and churches throughout the school holidays. Volunteers are required to help serve simple refreshments and be a helping hand during craft times as well as generally supervise and encourage the young people who attend. Our clubs and groups all have a Christian focus where Bible stories are shared and creative ways of praying are explored. Volunteers would need to be happy working in a Christian environment and enjoy the hustle and bustle associated with a lively child friendly club.

Our clubs and groups take children from aged 4 – 11 years old. Contact us for more information.

Volunteering with the Quest team requires an enhanced DBS check to be undertaken.

Blend Youth Project

Fay:

When I first came to Lighthouse nearly two years ago, I wasn’t very confident and suffered with anxiety; especially around people I didn’t know. I made the first step by making my daughter come with me. I thought the lady behind the counter was nice, she was really chatty when we came up to the till to buy something. So I took a deep breath and asked about volunteering. I started by doing two hours a week, then four and now I have moved to two days a week. It took me a while to get into the swing of it but with the manager's help and encouragement I soon got the hang of things. I’ve come on leaps and bounds and I’ve now moved from behind the scenes onto the shop floor and behind the till; I’m loving it so much that I’m thinking retail is to be ‘my thing’ permanently. All the other volunteers are really great too, which helps a lot because it gives you another reason to come in and makes a wonderful atmosphere to work in.

Marg:

It was four years ago that I went to Lighthouse, I came to buy a settee and was made so welcome. The manager was so nice and helpful and the shop was so clean. I had lost my husband 3 years before and I wanted to get out the house and keep busy, so I asked her if she was looking for volunteers. I started for one day a week and enjoyed it so much and got a lot of companionship and camaraderie from it that now I’m doing two days one week and three days the next. I can’t think of a nicer shop with nicer volunteers and staff to work with.

Robert:

I had just done an apprenticeship when I came to Lighthouse over two years ago, wanting to gain work and customer experience. I’d been very shy and not able to talk to people I didn’t know so volunteering in a shop was a big step for me. For the first few days I was very quiet and kept to myself but the manager quickly got me doing things I wouldn’t have done or thought of doing and went on the till. I was very nervous but she stayed with me and trained me and within a few hours I was able to be there all by myself. As time went on I found myself answering the telephone doing more and more customer orientated jobs that I thought I could ever have done.
